>>SILENT HILL 2<<
ENDINGS AND SECRETS

>>GAME RESULT SCREEN<<

The GAME RESULT screen is a great break-down of your gameplay statistics. You can see how far you've walked and ran, as well as your weapon accuracy. But what is most important is getting the best ending, hardest difficulty, fastest time, and more.

Every BIG star counts as 10 points and every SMALL star counts as 1 point. So, for example, if you have 4 BIG stars and 6 SMALL stars, that means your score was 46 points out of 100 -- the goal is to get 10 BIG stars -- and this is a challenge.

To get a good score, close to 100 points, you need to do the following:

  • Action Level: Hard
  • Riddle Level: Hard/Extra
  • Ending: Dog or Rebirth (Dog is quickest and easiest)
  • Ending Clear:
    Greatest Hits - 4/4(+3)
    Normal - 4/4(+1)
  • Saves: 0-2
  • Total Time: Under 3 hours
  • Walking Distance Doesn't Matter
  • Running Distance Doesn't Matter
  • Items:
    Greatest Hits - Over 100(+8)
    Normal - Over 100(+7)
  • Defeated Enemy By Shooting: 75 or more
  • Defeated Enemy By Fighting: 75 or more
  • Boat Stage Time: Under 1m20s
  • Boat Max Speed: Doesn't Matter
  • Total Damage: Under 500 pts

After all this, hopefully Your Rank will have ten gold stars.
>>ENDINGS<<
An article in the game indirectly helps you get all of the different endings. This article only appears after once completing the game, and the information within changes as to which ending it chooses to help you receive. The memos only cover the three normal endings: In Water, Maria, and Leave. It is located in room 205 of Wood Side Apartments, on a a sewing machine. This article is my basis for explaining how to get the endings through the game. Getting the different endings is not easy because it all depends on how you act, and the things you do (or not do), throughout the game. I have compiled a list to help you achieve the endings you want.

LEAVE ENDING

The Leave ending is the most common and easiest ending to get. You'll most likely receive this ending on a normal play-through, without doing anything special.

"The Road to Tomorrow"

The first step to a healthy
life is to avoid illness. That
may sound obvious, but it's
also very important.

Make sure you heal often and keep your status “green”.

Instead of working to heal
yourself after you're sick,
it's better to avoid getting
sick in the first place.

Use ampoules during boss fights, they help you avoid damage for a short period of time.

Also you have to maintain a
positive, optimistic outlook on
life. It's no use worrying over
things that have happened in
the past.

Don't focus too much on Maria in the game. Keep your head clear of what you came to Silent Hill for – to find Mary. Do not dwell on the past by avoiding everything that helps you get the IN WATER ending.

You've got to get outside and
play in the fresh air once in a
while, instead of just sitting
inside reading difficult books

This is telling you to not concentrate too much on memos and documents through the game, I believe. It is also telling you to avoid the hotel “headphones” conversation in the 2F reading room, right after watching the videotape, near the end of the game.

LEAVE ENDING

Specifically, to get this ending, you must abide by the following steps:

  • HEAL often; after every couple hits. Use ampoules when needed.
  • DO NOT attempt to go east on Nathan Avenue after rosewater park, or head back to Nathan Avenue after the bowling alley. Obey any of Maria's directions.
  • DO NOT spend too much time with Maria; take her to room S3 in the hospital right away and do not check back on her, ever. It also helps to injure her a few times.
  • LOOK at the photo and letter of Mary in your inventory.

Avoid the things that help you get the IN WATER Ending:

  • AVOID reading the hospital rooftop notebook about the suicidal person.
  • AVOID looking at the Knife Angela gives to you in the apartments.
  • AVOID the hotel “headphones” conversation in the 2F reading room, right after watching the videotape, near the end of the game.
  • AVOID listening to the entire sick in bed conversation of Mary and James in the last long corridor before the last boss fight; simply go through the door at the end, and skip it.

Avoid the things that help you get the MARIA Ending:

  • AVOID visiting Maria in room S3 of the hospital.
  • AVOID going back into the room in which you found Maria dead, in the Labyrinth.
  • AVOID Maria, at all costs.

MARIA ENDING

“How to be a Happy Couple”

Do you really love her?
In sickness and in health?
If you truly love her, then you
must act. It all depends on how
hard you fight for her.

In the game, you have to treat Maria very, very well and always keep her by your side. Fight for her, and never injure her.

Whatever happens, don't give up.
Always try just one more time.
Even though there may be hard
times, never turn to another
woman.

When you get to a situation in which you have to leave Maria behind, always go back to check on her. Don't have sympathy for Angela, don't turn to her, and don't go down her path.

And if it comes to it, you must
be willing to protect her with your
very life. After all, true love means
a willingness to sacrifice.

Always stay near Maria and fight for her survival.

Be true to your heart and with
luck, things will work out in the end.

And if you did just the right things, you will get this ending.
MARIA ENDING

Specifically, to get this ending, you must abide by the following steps:

  • DO NOT let the creatures hurt Maria.
  • DO NOT injure Maria yourself.
  • ALWAYS stay near Maria and fight for her survival.
  • DO NOT attempt to go east on Nathan Avenue after Rosewater Park, or head back to Nathan Avenue after the bowling alley. Obey any of Maria's directions.
  • Visit Maria a few times when she is in room S3 of Brookhaven Hospital
  • Try to go back into the room in which you found Maria dead, in the Labyrinth.

IN WATER ENDING

"Choosing Death"

When life is filled with nothing
but despair, some people choose
to end it all.

I once chose that path for
myself as well.
At the time I felt that I had no
other choices.

After I made my decision, it
became the only thing binding
me into this world.

Sometimes I would cry to myself
while thinking of the past, but
mostly all I did was plan over and
over again how and when I was
going to kill myself.

Make sure you examine Angela's knife in your inventory over and over again throughout the game as this shows you are contemplating suicide. Also, think of the past by examining the photo and letter of Mary.

I did stupid, dangerous things.
I figured it didn't matter since
I was going to die anyway, so
I went out of my way to invite
disaster.

Disregard your health by getting injured constantly and keep it on “red”. Don't heal too often - just do it when you need to.

I stopped taking to people and
it didn't bother me even when
friendships grew distant.

Do not check back on Angela, Eddie, or Maria and have complete disregard for everyone.
IN WATER ENDING

Specifically, to get this ending, you must abide by the following steps:
  • Do not heal right away and keep your status in “red”.
  • READ the hospital rooftop notebook about the suicidal person.
  • LOOK at the Knife Angela gives to you in the apartments, several times throughout the game.
  • LOOK at the message to James on the wall in Neely's Bar, Dark South Vale
  • LISTEN to the entire sick in bed conversation of Mary and James in the last long corridor before the last boss fight.
  • LISTEN to the hotel “headphones” conversation in the 2F reading room, right after watching the videotape, near the end of the game.

Avoid the things that help you get the MARIA Ending:

  • AVOID visiting Maria in room S3 of the hospital.
  • AVOID going back into the room in which you found Maria dead, in the Labyrinth.
  • AVOID Maria, at all costs.

REBIRTH ENDING

This is a special ending, in which you can only obtain your second time through. After you beat the game, you unlock four special items you need in order to get this ending. Collect these items, and you'll automatically get the ending.

White Chrism – Blue Creek apartments, Room 105
Lost Memories – In a newspaper stand at Texxon Gas Station
Obsidian Goblet – Historical Society in a smashed display case
Crimson Ceremony – In the 2F Reading Room of the Hotel, after watching the videotape.
DOG ENDING

In order to get this ending you need to beat the game with all three normal endings (MARIA, IN WATER, LEAVE) or once with the REBIRTH ending on the same save file. After starting a new game, when exiting Rosewater Park for the first time, just head straight and you will enter an open yard just west of Jack's Inn. Inside is a dog house with a Dog Key inside. Right after you watch the videotape in the hotel, leave the room and go to the Observation Room next door. When you use the key it will make a electronic noise, and you can enter the room.

This is a joke ending and it is quite humorous.
UFO ENDING

This ending is not available for the original, black label PS2 version of the game.

You need to beat the Letters from Silent Heaven main game once and the Born From a Wish episode once on the same save file. When you start a new main game, a new item will be available to you from the beginning, on the ground near a stall in the bathroom.

Once you have the Blue Gem, you can use it in the following three places to get the UFO Ending:

Alternate hospital in the 1F garden, after you've beaten the Flesh Lips Boss.
Right in front of the boat on the dock of Toluca Lake, after you've beaten the Eddie Boss.
Room 312 of Lake View Hotel, near the window by the TV, before you watch the videotape.

This is a joke ending and it is quite humorous.
>>SECRET ITEMS<<
Chainsaw
Gas-powered chainsaw.
Extremely high attack power

After beating the game once, on any difficulty, this item will be available to you unless you're on the PC version, in which case it will be available for your first playthrough. Once you get to the cemetery and meet Angela, you'll hear the motor buzzing in the distance. Exit the cemetery and continue down the same path into Silent Hill. As you near the chainsaw, the motor will get louder. Eventually, you'll find it on the right, buried deep into a log. If you idle with James, while the chainsaw is equipped, he will do a battle cry, which is very amusing.

Hyper Spray
Suspicious spray can.
Effect unknown.

This item can be unlocked after beating the game on Normal or Hard difficulty. It is found in the motor home on Saul Street. It is very similar to the "Hyper Blaster" from Silent Hill 1 in the fact that it's power (or potency), and color changes depending on your last game's rank. Also, be careful because the stronger spray you have, and depending on how much you use it, you can actually damage your health.

There are four different colors:

PURPLE (Final Rank less than 3.9 stars (or 39 points).)

It is the weakest color and is completely useless. It knocks patient demons to the ground, but you can't kick them and kill them (which is just plain annoying). It makes Mannequins angry and they attack you faster. At least it kills cockroaches, and wards off the moths during the final boss fight.

WHITE (Final Rank between 4 stars (40 points) and 7.9 stars (79 points).)

This is the most common color, and somewhat practical. It kills cockroaches. Freezes Mannequins, Lying Figures, and Bubble Head Nurses. It wards off the moths during the final boss fight.

YELLOW (Final Rank between 8 stars (80 points) and 9.9 stars (99 points).)

This is a pretty powerful color, and very practical. It immobilizes enemies and bosses for a long period of time. It kills cockroaches and freezes just about every enemy and boss in the game. It will ward off the moths during the final boss fight.

GREEN (Final Rank must be a 10 star (or 100 points). -- A perfect rank.)
This is the best color and is very fun to use because it will kill all enemies and bosses!

White Chrism
Blue Creek apartments, Room 105.
One out of four items you need to get the REBIRTH ending.

Lost Memories
In a newspaper stand at Texxon Gas Station.
One out of four items you need to get the REBIRTH ending.

Obsidian Goblet
Historical Society in a smashed display case.
One out of four items you need to get the REBIRTH ending.

Crimson Ceremony
In the 2F Reading Room of the Hotel, after watching the videotape.
One out of four items you need to get the REBIRTH ending.

Dog Key
You must beat the game with all three normal endings (MARIA, IN WATER, LEAVE) or once with the special REBIRTH ending on the same save file. After starting a new game, when exiting Rosewater Park for the first time, just head straight and you will enter an open yard just west of Jack's Inn. Inside is a dog house with the Dog Key inside. Refer to the ENDINGS section for more info.

Blue Gem
The original, black label PS2 version of this game will not have this item. You need to beat the Letters from Silent Heaven main game once and the Born From a Wish episode once on the same save file. When you start a new main game, a new item will be available to you from the beginning, on the ground near a stall in the bathroom. Refer to the ENDINGS section for more info.
>>EXTRA RIDDLE DIFFICULTY<<
To unlock Extra Riddle mode, you must first beat the game on Easy, Normal, and Hard difficulties. Once you beat the game on HARD/HARD difficulty, start a new game on HARD/HARD difficulty and you will then be playing on EXTRA. You will select hard but when you save it will say "Extra" and the puzzles are different. When you beat the game on Extra Riddle Level and select Hard Riddle level the next time, it will be just Hard. So you have to beat the game again to play Extra Riddle Level (it alternates between Hard and Extra)

This is difficult, but is covered in the detailed walkthrough here on Silent Hill Media.
>>EXTRA OPTIONS<<

These can be accessed on any playthrough, whether or not you beat the game. Though, if you beat the game, there will be more options available to you. To access them, go to the Options menu and press any of the shoulder buttons (L1, L2, R1, or R2). They are as follows:

Weapon Control (Normal or Switched)
Map (Zoom In or Zoom Out)
Blood Color (Normal, Green, Violet, or Black)
Walk/Run Control (Reverse or Normal)
View Control (Normal or Switch)
Bullet Adjust (x1, x2, or x3)
Noise Effect (On or Off)

>>OTHER SECRETS<<

REMOVE BLOCKS IN TEXT

Supposedly you can remove the blocks in text (such as in the monument and newspaper), if you beat the game on Extra Riddle mode, which requires you to have already beaten the game on Easy, Normal, and Hard difficulties. This is not true and is merely a rumor.

SOFT RESET

You can do a soft reset to easily reset the game when times get tough. To do a soft reset, simply hold down L1, L2, R1, R2, Start and Select, all at the same time. Note that you need to save your game first if you so wish.
